Poster artists to rock out at annual Flatstock show

The venue is jammed. The energy of the room radiates a passion for music, and the work of dedicated artists is finally organism showcased.

This isn't a rock candy concert, though, it's Flatstock 18 the pop rock-poster aim show opening its one-sixth year at Bumbershoot this Saturday at Seattle Center.

Flatstock is a time when poster designers get out of their apartments and display their art to the hoi polloi, most of whom don't realize the amount of work that goes into making the concert posters that advertize their favourite bands.

The normal, presented by the American Poster Institute and Bumbershoot, brings together poster designers from around the world and has become so popular that it's moved from the Center House to a larger country in the Fisher Pavilion.

"Sometimes you can't even walk in the aisles, it's so packed," said Laura Stalions, director of Seattle's Flatstock. "It's a brobdingnagian draw." She says Flatstock puts the "art" in "Seattle's Arts and Music Festival" Bumbershoot's tagline.

Here, four local poster designers chat almost their work, Flatstock and their engaged, busy lives.

Matt Terich, Design Medicine

As a child, Matt Terich wanted to be a comic book artist. He stopped drawing when he learned how to play the guitar.

Years later, Terich came full circle. As a musician in the band The Senate Arcade, he started creating fliers for their concerts. Before he knew it, he was designing for early bands as well.

Terich touched to Seattle from San Diego in 2000 and now works as a user-interface designer for a stealth-mode inauguration technology troupe. In the evenings, he designs posters; on the weekends, he prints them himself.

The sonority guitars and British-styled alternative pop of Riverside echoed the Anglophiliac passions of another Pennsylvania jazz band, the Ocean Blue. Not amazingly, Riverside's debut album, One, was produced by other Ocean Blue keyboardist Steve Lau. When One was released on Sire Records in 1992, Riverside was most alone in their unyielding devotion to the mid-'80s jangle of the Railway Children and the Smiths. Featuring Keith Kochanowicz (vocals, guitar, hammond organ) and his chum Glenn Kochanowicz (bass, vocals), Kenneth Jackson (guitars), and Geoff Verne (drums), Riverside formed in the improper tenner. The laborious metallic element thunder of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains had perforate holes in new wave's supremacy of substitute receiving set, and Riverside's languid melodies were simply likewise polite to appeal attention. The video recording for "Waterfall" appeared on MTV's long hundred Minutes and then swiftly vanished. If the album had been released iV years earlier, perchance it could've establish the hearing it merited; however, tastes changed, and One was dead on comer.

Riverside recorded a arcsecond record album, Taste, for Sire, only they were dropped by the label in front it landed on the shelves. Glenn Kochanowicz (freshwater bass, vocals) finally sold cassette copies of the record album through the Internet. Placing Riverside on hiatus, the Kochanowicz brothers formed the group Deluxe.

THE OFFSPRING

Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace: C

Stuff - the Iraq war, the media, America, etc. - is indeed messed up, as the Offspring suggests. But so is this album. Sure it’s witty, angry and dynamic compared to Good Charlotte, but that’s the problem. Pop-punk’s bar is so pathetically depressed any remotely anti-authoritarian rant gets the kids revved up like a half-off Hot Topic sale. No one expected this to rival “London Calling” or even “Enema of the State,” but fans deserve at least a few good jokes paired with a few great hooks. Download: “Nothingtown.”

Idol host donates wages to charity

'American Idol' host Ryan Seacrest has donated his fee for the charity special 'Idol Gives Back' to the charity fund.
According to People magazine, a source said that Seacrest wanted to show viewers that he was very serious about the cause.
The source said: "When he and Simon went to Africa last year and saw the children, it was really life-altering for him."
"He just knew he had to do his part and be willing to put his money where his mouth is."
'Idol Gives Back' is due to air in the US this Wednesday.

Revealed: Cindy of Samoa's secret

Cindy knew, Simon knew. TVNZ knew. But Stars in their Eyes viewers had to make up their own minds. Was that Tina Turner impersonator an Amazonian woman or a bloke?

"I'm a woman with extras," says the performer who goes by the stage name Cindy of Samoa. And yes, she says, she was born a man.

The 38-year-old hosted her own show in Apia for six years and was featured in a 1999 documentary about fa'afafine, Paradise Bent: Boys will be Girls in Samoa.

She rejects labels like transgender... "I don't believe in that, all the trans-this and trans-that." She says she's just her. "I'm a woman... a woman with some extras and some women don't have the extras."

Stars in Their Eyes host Simon Barnett says it was not an issue for him.

"Obviously I was aware, on a personal level, I realised she was very broad shouldered and very tall... when I gave her a little kiss on the cheek it felt a little prickly."

But he says he avoided talking about her sexuality because he didn't want it to be an "irritant" for her.

"I genuinely thought she was great fun and I loved her performance. I think that's why she won. The audience took her to heart."

TVNZ spokeswoman Megan Richards says Cindy's gender was not discussed by the network.

"In terms of the programme we are interested in contestant talent, not in biology."

Barnett says he has had calls and emails from viewers asking if Cindy was a man or woman.

Cindy who stands nearly 1.8m tall and has a collection of size 12 stilettos says she would have happily talked about it and was surprised it didn't come up in the interviews before the show or during banter in the episode.

"I was surprised they never asked anything. I thought maybe they're not interested at all in that part... maybe they just want me in the show and that's all they care about."

In Samoa, The Cindy Show ran for five years from 1996, attracting audiences of up to 1000 with tourist guides listing it as one of the "must dos" during any visit. In Auckland, Cindy is a regular on karaoke night at Family Bar on Auckland's K' Rd.

The win has expanded her fan base. She says when she was out in Auckland last week a crowd, including school children, swamped her, all wanting to say hello. "Everybody [yelled] Tina Turner! Tina Turner! And they ran up and gave me hugs and kisses."

The final of Stars in Their Eyes is on TV One, June 24 at 8.30pm.

David Beckham to Make Sharpie Debut in the UK

David Beckham has kept his clothes on for his latest endorsement deal -- as the face of Sharpie markers.

Sharpie, who are launching their first UK TV campaign, signed the LA Galaxy soccer superstar to promote their brand earlier this year.

The new ad shows Beckham, 33, using a Sharpie pen to autograph unusual items for fans. When the time comes to return the Sharpie to its owner, Beckham resists, finally swapping it for his signed shirt.

The ad launches in the UK on July 1 across ITV, Channel 4 and Five, as well as digital channels including MTV, Sky One, Living and Trouble.

Sharpie announced a two-year global partnership with Beckham in March. He will star in marketing communications in key regions across the world including North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia Pacific. He will also appear in in-store displays and packaging, and a revamped global web site, according to industry publication Marketing News.

"I have always enjoyed signing autographs for people, especially since I used to love getting my heroes' signatures when I was younger," Becks has said. "I love to use Sharpie markers, so it's a natural choice for me to partner with them."
